GUILTY is a non-alcoholic soda. This is a file on someone who drank one — off the clock, off the record.
primary charge — pleasure, billed to a hard day.

she said she'd earned it. nobody had asked.

She keeps a running tab on herself, and every drink has to clear it first. A hard week buys a glass of wine. A brutal Monday earns the Friday. Nothing crosses her lips that hasn’t been signed off as deserved — and she’ll tell you the invoice before you’ve asked to see it. Every pleasure paid for in advance, in effort, in a week bad enough to justify it. She has never once turned herself down.

Then, Thursday, 18:50 — the bill she’d been running all week finally came due, and she paid it out loud.

the incident. A bar, four people, drinks arriving. She sits down last, lifts her glass, and before it reaches her mouth she says I’ve earned this — to a table that hadn’t asked and wasn’t going to. Then she itemises the week that paid for it: a late Tuesday, a meeting that ran over, an early start she calls brutal and the record puts at 7:15. The drink was very good. She’d wanted it since three o’clock, which is the truest thing she said all night.

Nobody had asked. Nobody was going to. The table hadn’t laid a charge, so there was nothing to answer — she’d prosecuted herself, supplied her own evidence, and started serving the sentence before anyone looked up. And here’s the thing for the record: she says it most weeks. She has never once said it about a glass of water. The wanting was always the whole reason. The hard week was just the receipt she made herself keep.
